SEO for family and divorce lawyers: ranking for the searches people make at 11pm

Family law clients search in crisis, at night, on a phone, and they call the first firm that looks credible. This guide covers the keyword map for family and divorce lawyers, the pages that convert anxious searchers, the local SEO that decides most matters, and what a realistic first year looks like.

The short answer

Family law is the practice area where local SEO decides the most matters, because the searcher is stressed, in a hurry, and looking for someone nearby who seems safe to call. “Divorce lawyer Sydney” has around 3,600 searches a month and “family lawyer near me” about 5,400, and those are just the two most obvious terms. Behind them sits a long list of urgent, specific questions: parenting orders, property settlement, what happens to the house, whether they can move interstate with the children. A firm that answers those questions clearly, appears in the map pack for its suburb, and shows a run of recent, genuine reviews will take a disproportionate share of enquiries from firms that simply rank higher on a generic page.

This guide builds on our complete guide to SEO for lawyers and covers what is specific to family and divorce work.

Three patterns matter for the keyword plan.

  • They search the moment, not the category. “My ex won’t return the kids”, “can I change the locks”, “how much does a divorce cost in Australia”. These are research queries, but the person asking them is days from instructing someone.
  • They search locally, and “near me” dominates. Family law is done in person more than most areas, at the local registry and across a table. The map pack is the battleground.
  • They check reviews before they call. More than in any other practice area except injury. A firm ranked third with 60 recent reviews will out-convert a firm ranked first with nine.

The keyword map by matter type

Matter typeCommercial queriesResearch queries worth a guide
Divorcedivorce lawyer [suburb], divorce lawyers [city]how to apply for divorce in Australia, how much does a divorce cost, divorce after 12 months separation under one roof
Parentingchild custody lawyer [suburb], family lawyer parenting orderswhat is a parenting plan vs parenting order, can I relocate with my child, urgent parenting order
Propertyproperty settlement lawyer [suburb]how is property divided in a divorce, time limit for property settlement after divorce, superannuation splitting
ProtectionAVO lawyer, intervention order lawyer [city]what is an ADVO, how to respond to an intervention order
Agreementsbinding financial agreement lawyer, prenup lawyersis a prenup legally binding in Australia, what is a binding financial agreement
De factode facto lawyer [suburb]de facto property rights Australia, how long is de facto in Australia

Note the terminology. Australians search “custody” even though the Family Law Act stopped using the word decades ago. Your page can explain that it is called parental responsibility and living arrangements now, but the heading has to use the word people type. The same applies to “prenup”. Our keyword research guide covers this vocabulary problem in detail.

Pages that convert a frightened searcher

A family law page has to do two jobs at once: rank, and calm someone down enough to call. The elements that do both:

  • A plain answer to the question in the first paragraph. Not a firm introduction. If the query is “can my ex stop me seeing my kids”, the first sentence answers it in general terms and the second says what to do next.
  • What happens next, as steps. Uncertainty is the fear. A numbered sequence from first call to outcome reduces it, and it is the kind of structured content Google and AI assistants extract.
  • Costs, honestly. A fixed-fee divorce application price if you offer one, and a frank explanation of why contested parenting or property work is billed differently. Pages that avoid the subject lose to pages that address it.
  • A named lawyer. Photograph, name, years in family law, any accreditation. People are choosing a person.
  • Reassurance that is true. “Same-day callback”, “after-hours enquiries answered”, “first appointment within 48 hours”, if you actually do it. Not “compassionate” and “dedicated”, which every firm says.
  • A phone number and a short form, above the fold, on mobile. Most of this traffic arrives on a phone at night.

Local SEO is most of the result

For a family lawyer, the Google map pack for “family lawyer [suburb]” is worth more than the organic results beneath it. Three things determine map pack position: relevance, distance and prominence, in Google’s own words. Distance you cannot change. The other two you can.

  • Google Business Profile, complete and specific. Primary category Family Law Attorney (Google’s category names are American), services listed by matter type, hours that include when you actually answer the phone, and a description that mentions the suburbs and registries you work across.
  • Reviews, steadily. Ask at the natural moment, usually when a matter concludes well, with a direct link. Respond to every one. Reviews that mention the matter type and suburb help relevance. Our guide on getting more Google reviews covers a process that works inside the conduct rules and respects client confidentiality.
  • Location pages that are real. One page per suburb or precinct you genuinely serve, naming the local registry, the court, and how you work with clients there. Not twenty pages with the suburb name swapped.
  • Consistent citations. The same name, address and phone number across the legal directories, the Law Society find-a-lawyer listing, and your website.

The mechanics are set out in full in our local SEO for law firms guide.

Advertising rules that touch family law pages

Family law has no statutory advertising restrictions of the kind that apply to personal injury, but the conduct rules still bite. Claims of specialisation are limited to accredited specialists. Outcome claims are risky because every matter is different and a “we always get full custody” page is both misleading and, in parenting matters, tone-deaf. Testimonials need the client’s informed consent and should not disclose matters. The legal advertising rules guide has the detail by state.

A realistic first year

  • Months 1 to 2: Google Business Profile rebuilt, review process started, matter-type pages written for the two matter types that produce most of your revenue, technical fixes.
  • Months 3 to 5: research guides published, one or two a month, each written or reviewed by the lawyer who handles that work. Suburb pages for your real catchment. First map pack movement for the primary suburb.
  • Months 6 to 9: guides start earning consistent traffic and the occasional AI citation. Reviews pass the threshold where they visibly affect conversion. Enquiries become measurable month on month.
  • Months 10 to 12: expand to secondary suburbs and matter types, and start the referral and link work with counsellors, mediators and financial advisers who serve the same clients.

Australian retainers for this work usually sit in the $1,500 to $5,000 a month range depending on how many suburbs and matter types are in scope. Our family law marketing page sets out how we run it, and the cost guide has the ranges in full.

Questions

What are the best keywords for a family lawyer?

Suburb-level commercial terms such as “divorce lawyer [suburb]” and “family lawyer near me”, plus research questions by matter type: how to apply for divorce, parenting orders, property settlement time limits, binding financial agreements. Use the words clients use, including “custody” and “prenup”, even where the legislation uses different terms.

Is local SEO more important than content for family lawyers?

For most firms, yes, at least at first. Family law enquiries are local and urgent, and the map pack for the firm’s suburb produces more calls than organic rankings do. A complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews are the highest-return work.

How many reviews does a family law firm need?

There is no fixed number, but recency and steadiness matter more than the total. A firm adding two or three genuine reviews a month will outperform one with a large but stale count. Reviews that mention the matter type help relevance.

Can we publish testimonials from family law clients?

With informed consent, without disclosing the matter, and without implying an outcome others should expect. Many firms use first names or initials only. Check the conduct rules in your state and our legal advertising rules guide.

How long does family law SEO take to produce enquiries?

Map pack movement for the primary suburb typically appears at three to five months. Research guides earn traffic from month two or three. Measurable, consistent enquiry growth is usually visible by month six to nine.

Should a family lawyer also run Google Ads?

Often, for urgent terms like “urgent parenting order lawyer” where a call tonight is worth paying for. Ads fill the gap while SEO builds and stay useful for the highest-intent searches. The budget split is covered in our SEO versus Google Ads guide.
