Law firm marketing in Perth and Western Australia

Western Australia is the only state with its own Family Court, the only one where conveyancing is done by settlement agents, and the only one with a Warden’s Court for mining tenements. Its restraining orders have their own names and its de facto property law sits in state legislation. Almost no national legal content gets any of it right.

We take on one law firm per practice area, per region. Perth is large enough that we treat the CBD and West Perth, the northern corridor, the southern corridor and the east separately, tell us which catchment you actually want clients from.

The short answer

Western Australia is the most legally distinct state in the country to market into, and the differences are not cosmetic. WA is the only state with its own Family Court, the Family Court of Western Australia, and de facto couples separating here have their property dealt with under state legislation rather than the federal Family Law Act. Restraining orders are Family Violence Restraining Orders and Violence Restraining Orders, not AVOs or intervention orders. Conveyancing is done by licensed settlement agents, and Western Australians search for "settlement agent" rather than "conveyancer". Mining tenement disputes go to the Warden’s Court, a jurisdiction with no equivalent anywhere else.

Get those wrong and your content does not merely read as imported, it fails to match the words West Australians actually type. That is the single largest reason Perth firms lose search traffic to national competitors who did bother to localise.

The Perth market

A capital built around resources and distance

Greater Perth holds around two and a half million people and, being the most isolated major city in the world, keeps almost all of its own professional work rather than losing it to a larger centre. That is unusual and it matters: unlike Geelong or Newcastle, Perth does not compete against a bigger capital an hour away.

The economy is dominated by resources and energy, both the operations themselves in the Pilbara, the Goldfields and the north west, and the corporate, technical and services layer headquartered in the Perth CBD and West Perth. Around that sit construction, agriculture in the wheatbelt and south west, health, education and defence at Henderson and Garden Island.

For law firms that produces two quite separate markets. There is a genuinely substantial commercial and resources practice base, tenements, joint ventures, native title and heritage agreements, construction contracts, environmental approvals, clustered in the CBD and West Perth. And there is a large, ordinary suburban market across the northern and southern corridors doing family law, settlements, crime, injury and estates, with a workforce heavily shaped by fly-in fly-out rosters.

Western Australian law, not national law

Six ways WA differs, and why each one costs you traffic

Western Australia has its own Family Court

The Family Court of Western Australia exercises both federal and state jurisdiction, and separating de facto couples in WA have their property and financial matters dealt with under state legislation rather than the federal Family Law Act provisions that apply everywhere else. That is a substantive difference, not a naming one, and it means family law content written for the eastern states can be actively wrong for a WA reader. It is also a clear opportunity: firms that explain the WA position properly have very little competition doing so.

Restraining orders have their own names

Western Australia issues Family Violence Restraining Orders and Violence Restraining Orders under the Restraining Orders Act 1997 (WA). Nobody in Perth searches for an AVO or an intervention order. A page using those terms will simply not appear.

Conveyancing is done by settlement agents

Western Australia licenses settlement agents, and that is the term the public uses, a Perth buyer looks for a settlement agent, not a conveyancer. Law firms compete directly with them on price, so the winning position, as elsewhere, is the transactions where legal judgement earns its fee: deceased estates, related-party and family transfers, subdivisions, off-the-plan, and anything with a title or contract complication. But the vocabulary has to be right first, or you will not be found at all. See conveyancing marketing.

The Warden’s Court and the resources layer

Mining tenement disputes in Western Australia are heard in the Warden’s Court under the Mining Act 1978 (WA), a jurisdiction with no equivalent in any other state. Together with native title and Aboriginal heritage work, tenement due diligence and joint venture disputes, this is a body of practice that only exists here at this scale. Firms working in it should name the jurisdiction rather than describing themselves generically as "resources lawyers".

Fly-in fly-out work changes the client, not just the job

A large slice of Perth’s workforce is on roster, which affects family law arrangements, workplace injury claims, employment disputes and even how and when clients can take a phone call. Content and campaign scheduling that acknowledge this outperform content that does not. It also affects personal injury, where WorkCover WA governs workplace claims and the Insurance Commission of WA administers motor injury claims.

WA joined the Uniform Law recently

Western Australia adopted the Legal Profession Uniform Law in 2022, bringing it into line with New South Wales and Victoria, with the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia and the Legal Services and Complaints Committee. Practically, that means WA advertising rules now broadly track the NSW position rather than sitting in isolation. Our guide to legal advertising rules sets out what applies where.

Greater Perth, corridor by corridor

Perth spreads a long way north and south, and the corridors behave as separate markets with their own courts.

The highlighted corridors carry large populations and much lighter search competition than the CBD. For a suburban Perth firm they are almost always a better target than competing with West Perth practices for city-wide commercial terms.

Our approach

Localise the language, then pick a corridor

For most Perth firms the first job is not strategy, it is vocabulary. Going through the site and replacing eastern-states terminology with Western Australian terminology, settlement agent, Family Court of Western Australia, Family Violence Restraining Order, is cheap, fast, and often produces the largest single lift, because it turns pages that matched nothing into pages that match real local searches.

The second job is choosing where to compete. West Perth commercial terms are contested by firms with substantial budgets; Joondalup, Rockingham and Midland are not. A suburban firm concentrating on its own corridor will see results far sooner than one bidding city-wide.

Then the fundamentals: real suburb pages, a maintained Google Business Profile, a review programme, named solicitors, and local SEO aimed at owning your corridor’s map pack. On Google Ads, WA legal clicks are expensive in the commercial space and much more reasonable in the suburbs, which reinforces the same conclusion.

Where firms start

What Perth firms usually need first

Nine times out of ten the first recommendation is the terminology audit. Firms are astonished by how much of their site uses words their clients never type, "conveyancer" instead of settlement agent, "AVO" instead of restraining order, federal family law framing that does not describe the WA position.

The second is corridor focus, for suburban firms currently spread across the whole metropolitan area.

The third, for commercial and resources practices, is depth: enough genuine content on tenements, native title, heritage or construction to be the obvious answer, rather than another West Perth firm listing the same eight capabilities. See our full marketing services.

Questions

Do you have an office in Perth?

No. We are based in Sydney and work with firms across Australia remotely, including in Western Australia. The two-hour time difference is worth naming honestly: we schedule calls to suit Perth hours rather than expecting the reverse. Everything else, keyword research, landing pages, Google Business Profile management, ad campaigns, reporting, is unaffected by distance, provided the content is written to WA law rather than a national template.

Does Western Australian law really change the content that much?

More than any other state. WA has its own Family Court, and separating de facto couples here have their property matters dealt with under state legislation rather than the federal Family Law Act. Restraining orders are Family Violence Restraining Orders or Violence Restraining Orders. Conveyancing is done by settlement agents, and that is the term the public searches. Mining tenement disputes go to the Warden’s Court. Content written in Sydney gets all of that wrong, which is precisely the gap a WA firm can exploit.

Why do you keep talking about terminology?

Because it is the cheapest fix with the biggest effect. A page about conveyancing does not match a search for a settlement agent. A page about AVOs does not match a search for a violence restraining order. Firms often assume they are losing on authority or budget when in fact their pages are simply not eligible for the searches being made. A vocabulary pass across an existing site usually costs very little and can change rankings within weeks.

Do you work with firms outside the Perth CBD?

Most of our work in any capital is outside the CBD, and in Perth the case is particularly strong. West Perth commercial terms are contested by firms with large budgets, while Joondalup, Rockingham, Mandurah, Armadale and Midland carry substantial populations with much lighter competition and their own local courts. A suburban firm concentrating on its own corridor sees results considerably sooner.

How should family law marketing differ in WA?

It should be built around the Family Court of Western Australia and, for de facto matters, the state legislation that governs them rather than the federal provisions that apply elsewhere. Very few firms explain the WA position clearly, so the search results are unusually open. It is also worth addressing fly-in fly-out rosters directly, parenting arrangements built around a swing roster are a real and common problem here that generic content never touches.

Is my practice area still available in my part of Perth?

Often yes, because Perth is large enough that we treat the CBD and West Perth, the northern corridor, the southern corridor and the east as separate patches. We still only take one firm per practice area per patch. Tell us which corridor you want clients from during your free growth plan and we will tell you straight away.
