Law firm marketing in Brisbane and South East Queensland

Brisbane is Queensland’s most competitive legal market and the one where the state’s distinctive rules bite hardest: personal injury advertising is restricted by statute, conveyancing is reserved to solicitors, and the city has a Planning and Environment Court that exists nowhere else in Australia. Marketing here means knowing all three.

We take on one law firm per practice area, per region. Brisbane is large enough that we treat the inner city, the northside, the southside and the outer growth councils as separate patches, so tell us where you actually want clients from.

The short answer

Brisbane is the one Australian capital where the law itself limits what a personal injury firm may advertise. The Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (Qld) confines advertising of personal injury legal services to a narrow band of factual statements and separately prohibits touting, which makes the outcome-led campaigns routine in Sydney and Melbourne unavailable here. Any agency proposing one has not read the Act.

Two more Queensland facts shape the rest. Conveyancing must be done by a solicitor, Queensland has no licensed conveyancer profession, so property work is contested only by other law firms and is more defensible than in the southern states. And Brisbane has a dedicated Planning and Environment Court, a jurisdiction with no equivalent elsewhere in Australia, which makes development, appeal and land use work a genuine specialisation worth marketing as one.

The Brisbane market

A capital that grew into a metropolitan region

Greater Brisbane is a market of well over two and a half million people spread across a set of councils that behave quite independently. The City of Brisbane itself, then Ipswich to the west, Logan to the south, Redland and the bayside to the east, and Moreton Bay to the north. Each has its own courts presence, its own demographics and its own competitive intensity, and a firm that markets to "Brisbane" is really marketing to the inner ring only.

The city’s growth has been the story of the last decade, and infrastructure and preparation for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games has accelerated it. That drives construction and building disputes, planning and development work, compulsory acquisition, and a steady flow of property and body corporate matters as density increases.

Competitively, Brisbane sits between the national and mid-tier firms in the CBD and a very large number of suburban practices. Search competition in the inner city for the high-value practice areas is genuinely fierce; twenty kilometres out it drops sharply. That gradient is the most exploitable feature of the market.

Queensland rules that change the plan

What Queensland practice changes about the marketing

Personal injury advertising is restricted by statute

This is the biggest single difference between marketing a Brisbane firm and a Sydney one. The Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (Qld) limits published advertising of personal injury legal services to a narrow set of factual matters and prohibits touting. Outcome-led messaging, the staple of interstate PI advertising, is not available. A compliant Queensland personal injury campaign is built on informational content, the practitioner’s standing and general search visibility rather than on claim results, and it works, but it has to be designed that way from the start. We put the compliance question to your firm before anything is published. See our guide to legal advertising rules in Australia.

Conveyancing is solicitor-only

Queensland has no licensed conveyancer profession. Every property transfer goes through a solicitor, so unlike New South Wales and Victoria you are not competing against a cheaper non-lawyer operator. That makes conveyancing a more defensible and more marketable practice area here, and one that reliably feeds wills, estates and small business work later. The REIQ contract, the statutory cooling-off period and Queensland’s finance and building-and-pest condition structure are specific enough that national content will not rank.

The Planning and Environment Court

Queensland is the only state with a dedicated Planning and Environment Court, sitting in Brisbane, hearing development appeals, enforcement and land use disputes. For a firm doing planning or development work in a city building toward 2032, this is a genuine specialisation that most competitors describe only as "property and development". Naming the jurisdiction is worth doing.

Protective orders are DVOs

Queensland issues Domestic Violence Orders under the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 (Qld). Family law content built around AVOs is written for New South Wales and will not surface for Queensland searches.

Body corporate work is a Queensland specialty

Queensland’s community titles legislation and the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management give strata disputes their own framework and their own dispute resolution pathway. In a city adding apartment stock quickly, this is a growing area with far less search competition than mainstream property work.

A different regulator

Queensland has not adopted the Legal Profession Uniform Law that covers New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. The profession operates under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Qld), with the Queensland Law Society and the Legal Services Commission.

Greater Brisbane, council by council

Search competition and matter mix vary enormously across South East Queensland. These are the sub-markets we usually separate.

The three highlighted rows carry serious population and comparatively light search competition. For most suburban Brisbane firms they are a better target than trying to rank against CBD practices for inner-city terms.

What we would actually target for your suburb

Every Brisbane suburb searches for legal help a little differently. Pick a suburb below to see the kind of local search phrase we would build your visibility around.

Precincts we target separately: Brisbane CBD, Chermside, Ipswich, Redcliffe / Bayside, Springfield, Logan.

Our approach

Choosing where you can actually win

The most common mistake in Brisbane is spending a suburban firm’s budget competing for inner-city terms. "Commercial lawyer Brisbane" is contested by practices with marketing budgets an order of magnitude larger, and winning it is neither cheap nor quick. "Conveyancing solicitor North Lakes" is winnable this year.

So the first decision is honest targeting: which councils and which suburbs do you genuinely want work from, and where is the competition thin enough that investment converts. From there the build is conventional but done properly, real suburb pages rather than a locations list, a well-maintained Google Business Profile, a review programme, and local SEO fundamentals that let you own the map pack in your own catchment.

On Google Ads, Brisbane legal clicks are expensive and getting more so, which makes negative keywords, geo-targeting and call tracking the difference between a campaign that pays and one that does not. Where personal injury is in scope, every piece of copy goes through the Queensland restrictions first.

Where firms start

What Brisbane firms usually need first

Suburban firms most often need focus. They are spread thin across terms they cannot win, and concentrating the same budget on a defined catchment produces results quickly. That is a strategy change more than a spending one.

CBD and mid-tier firms usually need differentiation instead: enough depth of content in a specific practice area to be the obvious answer, rather than one more general commercial firm competing on the same three keywords.

Personal injury firms almost always need a compliance review before anything else, because a surprising amount of Queensland PI marketing has been built from interstate templates. And property-focused firms need to be told that conveyancing is worth more here than their southern counterparts assume. See our full marketing services.

The comparison

Brisbane against the rest of Queensland

Brisbane has the volume and the competition; regional Queensland has neither. A position won here costs more to take and more to hold, and it needs continuous investment in a way that a regional position does not.

That is worth knowing if your firm has offices in more than one Queensland market, because the right strategy differs. In Cairns, Townsville or Toowoomba a modest content investment can own a market for years. On the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast the dynamic sits somewhere in between.

Questions

Do you have an office in Brisbane?

No. We are based in Sydney and work with firms across Australia remotely, including a number in South East Queensland. Keyword research, landing pages, Google Business Profile management, ad campaigns and reporting do not depend on proximity. Knowing Queensland law well enough to write compliant, accurate content does, and that is where most interstate agencies come unstuck.

Can you advertise personal injury services in Queensland the way firms do interstate?

No, and this is the most important thing to understand about marketing a Queensland PI practice. The Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (Qld) limits published advertising of personal injury legal services to a narrow set of factual statements and separately prohibits touting, so the outcome-led advertising common in New South Wales and Victoria is not available. We build Queensland PI campaigns around informational content, search visibility and the practitioner’s standing, and we put the compliance question to your firm before anything goes live.

Do you work with firms outside the Brisbane CBD?

Most of our Brisbane work is outside the CBD, and for suburban firms it is usually the better strategy anyway. Inner-city terms are contested by practices with much larger budgets, while Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redlands carry serious population against far lighter search competition. A suburban firm that concentrates its spend on its own catchment will normally see results faster than one competing for city-wide terms.

Is conveyancing really worth more in Queensland?

Yes. Queensland has no licensed conveyancer profession, so property transfers must go through a solicitor. That removes the cheaper non-lawyer competitor that undercuts conveyancing marketing in New South Wales and Victoria, leaving you competing only against other firms. It is also reliable repeat-and-referral work that feeds wills, estates and small business matters later, which makes it a sound foundation rather than just a volume line.

How long before a Brisbane firm sees results?

Google Ads can produce enquiries within days once conversion tracking and negative keywords are set up, though legal clicks here are expensive enough that the targeting has to be tight. Local SEO in a suburban Brisbane catchment usually shows movement in three to six months. Inner-city commercial terms take considerably longer and cost considerably more, which is exactly why we push most firms toward a defined catchment first.

Is my practice area still available in my part of Brisbane?

Often yes, because Brisbane is large enough that we treat the inner city, northside, southside and the outer growth councils as separate patches. We still only take one firm per practice area per patch. Tell us where you actually want clients from during your free growth plan and we will tell you straight away whether it is open.
